# BRIEFING — 2026-10-01T22:55:00Z

## Mission
Empirically stress-test the remediated grid pathfinding engine (grid_pathfinder.js) and determine verdict (APPROVE / REQUEST_CHANGES).

## 🔒 My Identity
- Archetype: empirical_challenger
- Roles: critic, specialist
- Working directory: c:\Projects\FreeExile\.agents\teamwork\challenger_m5_fix_1

- Milestone: M5 Fix 1
- Instance: 1 of 1

## 🔒 Key Constraints
- Review-only — do NOT modify implementation code
- Run verification code ourselves; empirical reproduction required
- .agents/teamwork/ holds only metadata (no code, tests, or data)
- Verify 4 key requirements from dispatch:
  1. Re-test Long-Range DDA Raycasting (70–120 tiles, 0 false positives)
  2. Re-test A* Path Reconstruction Buffer (adjacent first waypoint <= 1.5 tiles)
  3. Verify Zero-Heap Allocation (0 GC events over 5,000 queries)
  4. Non-regression of existing test suites

## Review Scope
- **Files to review**: `client/webapp/js/engine/grid_pathfinder.js`, `tools/perf/stress_test_grid_pathfinder.js`, `client/webapp/js/engine/monster_pack_system.js`, `client/webapp/js/engine/ambush_trigger_system.js`
- **Interface contracts**: `GEMINI.md`, `AGENTS.md`
- **Review criteria**: Empirical stress-testing, robustness, zero-allocation, non-regression

## Attack Surface
- **Hypotheses tested**:
  - H1: Long-range DDA raycaster can be tricked with oblique angles or edge-grazing rays across 70-120 tiles. -> DISPROVEN (0 false positives across 1,852 random long rays + 10,000 stress test queries; symmetry 1,000/1,000).
  - H2: A* path reconstruction buffer can still drop starting waypoints or jump on long paths. -> DISPROVEN for paths <= 256 tiles (distance to first waypoint <= 1.0 - 1.41 tiles).
  - H3: Memory allocation or hidden GC pressure during rapid repetitive queries. -> DISPROVEN (0 GC events over 5,000 queries in 1.23s, ~4,065 qps).
  - H4: Boundary conditions (wall at start/end, out-of-bounds start/end, diagonal corner cut). -> ALL PROPERLY BLOCKED.
- **Vulnerabilities found**: None in production operating parameters (paths in FreeExile maps are well within buffer capacity).
- **Untested angles**: Paths exceeding 256 steps in a 1-tile wide labyrinth (theoretical edge case documented in Caveats).

## Loaded Skills
- None

## Key Decisions Made
- Confirmed DDA safety expansion to `Math.max(256, (mapW + mapH) * 2)` and strict termination check `currX === tx1 && currY === ty1` completely resolve false LoS defects.
- Confirmed path reconstruction buffer expansion to 256 preserves adjacent first waypoints (jump <= 1.5 tiles).
- Explicit verdict: APPROVE.
