# BRIEFING — 2026-10-01T19:22:00Z

## Mission
Investigate server-side procedural map system, BSP generation, data structures, open-world wilderness extensions, and binary serialization for FreeExile.

## 🔒 My Identity
- Archetype: explorer
- Roles: Server Map Explorer, read-only investigation, architectural analysis
- Working directory: c:\Projects\FreeExile\.agents\teamwork\explorer_survey_server
- Original parent: 1cc48fc5-ce57-4f48-8964-24cab4bfcacc
- Milestone: Procedural Map System Architecture Survey

## 🔒 Key Constraints
- Read-only investigation — do NOT implement
- File length limits: Python/JS <= 350 soft cap / 500 hard cap; Catalogs <= 700 / 1000; Docs <= 400 / 600
- Server-authoritative design; strict typing, dataclass with slots
- Backward compatibility with existing tests and movement authority

## Investigation State
- **Explored paths**:
  - `server/world/procedural_map_engine.py` (Dungeon generator, rooms, corridors, A*, obstacles, 396 lines)
  - `server/world/map_data_types.py` (TileType, ObstacleType, TileCell, MapRoom, MapGridData, 176 lines)
  - `server/world/map_biome_catalog.py` (5 canonical Grimdark biomes, 120 lines)
  - `server/world/zone_catalog.py` (10 canonical zones + dungeons + secret chambers, 625 lines)
  - `server/world/zone_engine.py` (ZoneEngine, boundary checks, monster spawn validation, 473 lines)
  - `server/gateway/network_gateway.py` (PacketCodec with 4-byte framing)
  - `proto/map_zone.proto` (Protobuf definitions for zone payloads)
  - `tests/unit/test_war_fog_and_procedural_map.py` (420 lines, 20 tests)
  - `tests/unit/test_map_quest_and_boss_integration.py` (186 lines, 5 tests)
  - `tests/unit/test_zone_bounds_expansion.py` (203 lines, 9 tests)
  - `tests/unit/test_zone_monster_spawning_rules.py` (259 lines, 14 tests)
  - `tests/unit/test_movement_authority.py` (61 lines, 2 tests)
- **Key findings**:
  - ProceduralMapEngine currently only generates indoor BSP dungeons; lacks open-world organic generation.
  - TileType lacks open-world variants: PATH, DENSE_TERRAIN, WATER, POI, ENCOUNTER_LOW/MEDIUM/HIGH.
  - File length constraint: procedural_map_engine.py is 396 lines (soft cap 350, hard cap 500); extending wilderness generation should be modularized into a dedicated generator (`wilderness_map_generator.py`) and serializer (`map_binary_serializer.py`).
  - Binary format defined: 16-byte header + POI list + encounter zones list + 1 byte/tile row-major grid. 60x45 = ~2.75 KB, 120x90 = ~10.9 KB.
  - Test inventory compiled: 10 relevant test suites identified, all passing; new `test_tile_collision.py` needed.
- **Unexplored areas**: None for server investigation scope; client-side rendering/collision surveyed as interface reference.

## Key Decisions Made
- Architecture decision: Modularize wilderness map generation into `server/world/wilderness_map_generator.py` (<350 lines) to avoid violating the 500-line hard cap on `procedural_map_engine.py`.
- Binary format: 16-byte fixed header (Magic 0x4645, version, biome_code, width, height, spawn, boss_gate) + metadata table + raw Uint8Array tile bytes.
- Safe spawn radius: Guarantee r <= 8 around spawn is pure FLOOR/PATH with zero obstacles or hostile spawns.
